A tax appointment goes best when you walk in organized. A few small habits beforehand can save you a follow-up visit, speed up your filing, and help your preparer catch every credit you're owed. Here's how to get ready for your first appointment with our East Houston office.

1. Gather your documents early

Don't wait until the night before. Start a folder — paper or digital — and drop documents in as they arrive. Employers have to send W-2s by the end of January, and most 1099s land around the same time. Use our tax filing checklist as your guide so nothing gets missed.

2. Bring identification for everyone on the return

You'll need a government-issued photo ID and Social Security cards or ITINs for yourself, your spouse (if filing jointly), and any dependents. These details confirm identity and have to match IRS records.

3. Note what changed since last year

Life changes affect your taxes: a new job, marriage or divorce, a new dependent, buying a home, starting a side business, retirement. Write down anything that shifted during the year and mention it at your appointment — even if you're not sure it matters.

4. Organize, don't just pile

A stack of receipts is harder to work with than a categorized summary. If you're self-employed, group expenses by category (supplies, mileage, software, and so on) and total each one. The more organized your records, the faster and more accurate your filing.

5. Bring your prior-year return

A copy of last year's return helps us carry information forward, confirm carryovers, and spot what changed. If you filed somewhere else, that's fine — just bring a copy.

6. Write down your questions

It's easy to forget what you meant to ask once you're sitting in the appointment. Jot down your questions ahead of time so you leave with answers, not lingering uncertainty.

7. Know what not to bring

Don't bring sensitive documents you don't need to share, and don't email Social Security numbers or financial documents ahead of time. We guide you through secure submission when it's needed. See our document upload page for the secure workflow.

What happens during the appointment

We review your documents, ask clarifying questions, and explain what we're seeing. If anything is missing, we tell you exactly what's needed before your return is prepared. Nothing is filed until you review and approve the prepared return.
